Kalemegdan park is the largest and loveliest park in
Belgrade with an area of 52 ha. Work on the park started on the orders of
Prince Mihajlo Obrenovic after the fortress had been handed over to the
Serbs in 1867. The draft design was made by Emilijan Josimovic.
Belgrade fortress is the most important
cultural-historical complex in the city, standing above the Sava-Danube
confluence.
Several monuments to well-known people in cultural &
public life have been erected in the park.
The Belgrade fortress
is one of the most fascinating points on the sacral and secular geography of
Euroasia. Since its construction the Belgrade fortress has been constantly
attacked and defended , destroyed and renovated. Chronicles trace a history
of about 40 to 60 devastations of the fortress. The present remains of the
Belgrade fortress have not been a fotification in many years. NOwdays, we
identify Kalemegdan with the rose of the winds, Sahat Tower, the MIlitary
Museum, the statue of Belgrade Victor, the Zoo...
