Avala is a hill located 18 km from Belgrade, and covered in deciduous and coniferous woodland. It is traditional place for day trips. In this pleasant pleasant environment, then Monument to the Unknown Soldier, work of Ivan Mestrovic, was erected in 1938 on the summit of the hill.
